"6.6 million in U.S. filed for unemployment last week"

6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, a slight drop from the 6.9 million a week prior. Nearly 17 million Americans, or about 10 percent of the U.S. labor force, have filed for unemployment in the last three weeks.

The 384,444 unemployment claims for March 29-April 4 in Michigan eclipse the previous week's total of 303,638 initial unemployment claims, setting a new record for weekly unemployment claims for the third consecutive week. During the Great Recession, the highest weekly total hit 665,000 in the U.S. and 76,702 in Michigan.

Wayne County has been the hardest hit by COVID-19 and unemployment claims. In the week of March 29-April 4, 156,975 Wayne County residents filed an unemployment claim. Oakland (95,415) and Macomb (93,248) counties had the next largest jobless claims totals last week, each rising more than 1,000 percent since Feb. 29, according to state data. Washtenaw County had the largest percentage increase of unemployment claims at 1,379 percent between Feb. 29 and April 4, though only a numerical increase of 19,243 claims.
